The dense cedar forest and limestone outcroppings prevented Waters from bringing his four deadly artillery pieces into position to support the Confederate infantry, which was attacking the Union positions along the Nashville Pike. Without sufficient artillery support, the Confederate infantry assaults were doomed to failure.
